A New Outlook on Life: Intergenerational Preschools

December 20th, 2021

It’s no secret that many of us have learned our most impactful lessons from our elders. Because of this, we assume lessons are taught to us from those who have lived a long life, but thanks to recent studies, we are realizing older adults have much to gain from spending time with children as well. Continue reading our blog to learn more about the benefits of intergenerational preschools.

Elderly Adult Benefits

Research has consistently shown intergenerational preschools to be beneficial for seniors. The energetic spark of a little one’s personality helps promote higher energy levels and helps seniors rediscover a sense of purpose. The social, emotional, and mental stimulation that comes from befriending a child allows elderly adults to learn new skills and continue to stay cognitively engaged. These daily opportunities have also proven to decrease social isolation that often comes with decreased mobility in old age.

Remembering the Good Times

Many older adults are either mothers or fathers who have fond memories connected to taking care of young children. Uniting young children and seniors often triggers favorite memories for the elderly. While chasing kids and playing on the floor may not be an option anymore, the opportunity to read a book or play with dolls will bring back the joy that they experienced in the past.

Preschooler Benefits

At first glance, the sight of a child happily engaging with an elder is precious. Whether they’re reading a book or playing with toys, it’s beautiful to see generations connecting. When you take a deeper dive, you realize these interactions are doing much more than putting smiles on faces; these exchanges are aiding and promoting child development. As a child’s confidence grows through interacting with older adults, they demonstrate higher levels of communication and cooperative play, as well as increased motor and cognitive skills. Children who regularly socialize with elderly adults have an increased sense of empathy, greater social acceptance, and a better overall vocabulary.

As many studies have shown, children and seniors benefit from regular interactions. Intergenerational relationships foster an enriched environment where both parties will build confidence and increase their cognitive awareness. At Inver Glen, we have created a community where health and happiness are our main priorities for our residents. We take pride in providing a wide range of opportunities to support that mission, and our intergenerational preschool is one of the many experiences through which our residents flourish.

Inver Glen’s 10th annual Holiday Open House last month was a rousing success! Families, tenants, and preschoolers enjoyed wonderful food, music, and socializing. There were smiles and holiday cheer everywhere! ???

Inver Glen tenants were treated to a variety of local caroling groups throughout the Holiday season. They also worked on holiday crafts during a weekly “hobby workshop” held right in our community room.

Tenants from our Willow Cove units were treated to a special night tour of the local holiday lights and decorations.

The weekly “hobby workshop” at Inver Glen was a busy group last month. Check out these delightful snowmen, all crafted with love (and socks)! ⛄️❤️

“Inver Gals,” which is Inver Glen Senior Living’s very own women’s choir and rhythm band, provided entertainment on Christmas Eve. Both sacred and secular music shared with our large audience.

Inver Glen’s hallways were filled with the wonderful smell of baking cookies on “Exchange Day.” There were lots of great recipes and ideas going around as the cooks shared secrets with each other. ?
